First Trimester: Baby’s Development

This is part 2 of 3

FIRST MONTH of Baby’s Development – months 1, 2 & 3
Embryo DevelopmentDevelopment during the first month of your first trimester is when the amniotic sac forms around the fertilized egg and the placenta develops. The placenta is highly important, because this is what transfers the nutrients from you to your baby.

Baby’s Growth – At the end of the first month:

  • Your baby has a primitive face, with only dark circles for eyes.
  • Circulation is beginning to form during the latter part of the first month
  • The mouth, throat, and lower jaw are starting to develop.

Baby’s Size – Your baby is the approximate size of a grain of rice. Yes, that small. Your baby is about a 1/4 inch long at this time.

SECOND MONTH of Baby’s Development

As the second month of the first trimester starts…

  • First Trimester Month 2Your baby’s face continues to develop
  • Tiny buds start to form that grow into the legs and arms
  • The brain, spinal cord, and neural system are well formed by this time
  • Sensory organs, along with the digestive tract are just beginning to develop
  • The cartilage is starting to be replaced by bone
  • Your baby is starting to move

Baby’s Size – At the end of the second month, your baby is about 1 inch long and now weighs about 1/3 of an ounce.

THIRD MONTH of Baby’s Development
By the time the third month of the first trimester is over, your baby is fully formed.

  • First Trimester Month 3Your baby’s gender is still hard to distinguish because of the size.
  • The baby has its arms, legs, hands, feet, toes, fingers, and can open and close its mouth and hands.
  • The areas that are still developing at this time are the outer ears, the fingernails, toenails, and teeth.
  • The baby’s urinary system, liver, and circulatory systems are all working at this time.

By the end of the third month, the chances of a miscarriage decreases significantly because of development that has taken place.

Baby’s Size – At the end of the third month, your baby is about 3 to 4 inches long and weighs about 1 ounce.
