Second Trimester: Baby’s Development

This is Part 2 of 3

Development of Your Baby During the Second Trimester - months 4, 5 & 6

FOURTH MONTH

By the time you enter the beginning of your second trimester or fourth month, your baby’s features are becoming more defined.

  • Second Trimester Month 4Baby Can Do – He or she can suck its thumb, make faces, stretch, and yawn.
  • Nervous system – The nervous system is functioning
  • Genitalia – The genitalia is formed.
  • Boy or Girl – Usually by this time, your health care professional can perform an ultrasound and tell if you are having a boy or a girl.
  • Heartbeat – The heartbeat may also be audible at this time with a Doppler.

Baby’s Size – Your baby has now grown to about 6 inches in length and weighs approximately 4 ounces.

FIFTH MONTH

Lanugo – Your baby’s hair is starting to grow and the lanugo, which is the soft fine hair that covers the shoulders, back, and temples, is growing. The lanugo protects the baby and after birth is shed at the end of the first week of life.

Vernix Caseosa - There is a whitish coating that covers the baby’s skin at this time called the vernix caseosa. It is a cheesy feeling substance that protects the baby’s skin from the amniotic fluid and is shed right before birth.

Movement – Your baby is usually moving by this time, this first movement is called quickening.

Baby’s Size – Your baby has now grown to about 10 inches in length and weighs about 1/2 to 1 pound.

Second Trimester Month 6SIXTH MONTH

  • Eyes – In the sixth month, the baby’s eyelids start to part and the eyes open.
  • Sound – Your baby responds more to sounds by moving or with an increase in the heart rate.
  • Hiccup – Sometimes you can see your baby hiccup.

Baby’s Size – Your baby has now grown to about 12 inches in length and weighs about 2 pounds.

Premature birth at 6 months – If your baby is born prematurely at this time, with intensive care it has the possibility of surviving.
