Development of the Baby During the Third Trimester - months 7, 8, 9

Third Trimester Month 7SEVENTH MONTH

By the time you enter your seventh month, your baby begins to deposit fat.
The hearing is fully developed and he or she moves frequently. Talk with your baby during this time, because he or she can respond to pain, light, stimuli or sound.

Baby’s Size – Your baby is now approximately 14 inches long and weighs about 2 to 4 pounds.

If your baby was born prematurely at seven months, it would probably survive.


  • When your baby reaches the eighth month, you will notice that it kicks more.
  • Your baby’s brain is rapidly developing and he or she can see and hear more.
  • Although most of the internal organs are well developed, the baby’s lungs are still immature.
  • Your baby continues to develop more body fat reserves and continues to gain weight.

Baby’s Size – At this time, your baby is about 18 inches in length and weighs approximately 5 pounds.

  • Third Trimester Month 9During the ninth month, your baby keeps growing and maturing.
  • The lungs are now fully developing.
  • The baby’s reflexes become coordinated.
  • They change positions preparing themselves for labor and delivery.
  • The baby drops down and the head is facing downward toward the birth canal.

Baby’s Size – By this time, your baby is about 18 to 20 inches in length and weighs about 7 pounds.
